I’m free from Smoking and I’m never going back- Paula’s story
8 Jan 2026
After suffering a heart attack, Paula knew it was time to make a change. She had tried quitting before, once successfully for four months, but returned to smoking when her partner started again. This time, she was determined to quit for good.
“I’d tried to quit before and managed four months, but when my partner started smoking again, I slipped back into the habit too. I felt embarrassed every time I lit a cigarette. I hated the smell on my clothes and in my car, but I still smoked, especially in social situations. It was a hard cycle to break.”
“This time, I reached out to Leeds Stop Smoking service for support and was put in touch with a Health Coach. I was nervous at first, but the staff were so easy to talk to. I chose to use nicotine patches and received regular phone calls to check in on my progress. That support made all the difference.”

“Quitting wasn’t easy. I had to change my routines, no more smoking in the kitchen diner. I started having breakfast in the lounge with the TV on instead. I cleaned my car, so it smelled fresh and avoided friends who smoked, choosing to spend time with those who didn’t.
“Now, I’ve been smokefree for six weeks and I feel fantastic. I’m more confident, proud of myself, and I love that I don’t smell of smoke anymore. My breathing has improved, I don’t wheeze at night, and I can keep up in gym classes. I haven’t rewarded myself with the money I’ve saved just yet, but I’m sure I will after Christmas!”
“I’m 100% positive I’ll never smoke again. Cigarettes used to rule my life, always thinking about when I could have my next one. Now, I feel free. I don’t worry about my house smelling when visitors come over, and the best part? My grown-up children have decided to quit too. They said, “If you can do it, so can we.” I’m proud of myself and excited for a brighter, smokefree future.”
