Breathing free- Mark’s story

21 Apr 2026

Mark decided to quit smoking after ongoing health problems and growing concerns about the long‑term impact smoking was having on his wellbeing. Although he had successfully quit before, he returned to smoking due to advertising and peer pressure. After self‑referring to Leeds Stop Smoking Services and accessing face‑to‑face support with a Health Coach, Mark has now been smokefree for nearly a month and is already noticing major improvements in his health, fitness and finances.

“When I was smoking, I used to tell myself it helped with stress, but deep down I knew I was doing damage to my health. I’d quit before for quite a long time, but I slipped back into old habits. At first, I didn’t feel great about contacting the service — I didn’t believe I could stop again and had become a bit too content with smoking, even though I knew it wasn’t good for me.”

Leeds Stop Smoking Services support people to quit smoking by offering free, personalised help tailored to individual needs. The service provides one‑to‑one support with trained health coaches, face‑to‑face and remote options, and access to nicotine replacement therapies. Support focuses on managing cravings, changing routines, building healthier habits and increasing confidence to stay smokefree for the long term.

“Once I started working with a Health Coach, things really began to change. We talked openly about cravings, how to deal with stress, and practical changes I could make to my routine to support a smoke free life. Using nicotine patches and mints really helped take the edge off cravings, but the coaching also helped me change the way I think about smoking and my health.

“I did face challenges — shopping trips were tough, family members still smoke, and stress was a big trigger for me. To overcome this, I started going for more walks and looked at joining a gym. Since turning 40, I’ve been taking my health much more seriously, especially after doctors warned me about the consequences of not making changes.

“I’ve now been smoke free for almost a month, and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made. I feel healthier, fitter and my breathing has improved dramatically. I’m also saving a lot of money, which I’m putting towards a two‑week holiday to Bridlington next year, as well as treats and time with family.

“My next step is simple — I want to remain smokefree and never touch a cigarette again. I’d also love to help encourage others to quit if I can. I honestly couldn’t have done this without the support, and I would strongly encourage anyone thinking about quitting to give the service a go — it could be the best decision they ever make.”
