Community outreach at Briggate
24 Sep 2026
The Leeds Stop Smoking Service team took to Briggate in Leeds city centre on 6 and 7 August 2026, engaging with members of the public to raise awareness of the free support available to help people quit smoking and vaping. During the two-day outreach activity, the team spoke to more than 25 people, completed carbon monoxide (CO) readings, made referrals into the service and signposted several others to additional support.
On the first day, advisors distributed information leaflets to passers-by and visited a range of local businesses along Briggate, including major retailers and community organisations. Businesses were encouraged to display materials in staff areas and share information about the service with employees who may be thinking about quitting smoking.
To create more opportunities for meaningful conversations, the team hosted an information stall on the second day. The stall provided a welcoming space where people could stop, ask questions and find out more about the benefits of becoming smokefree. Advisors also visited stores within Trinity Leeds and neighbouring shopping areas to further promote the service and connect with local workers.
Over the course of the event, the team completed two CO readings, made three referrals into the service and signposted four people to support. The outreach activity helped raise awareness of the free stop smoking support available across Leeds and provided valuable opportunities to speak directly with residents and workers about their quit journey.
Reflecting on the event, the team identified the benefits of attending larger organised community events where multiple organisations and event staff are present. These settings can provide greater opportunities for engagement while ensuring a supportive environment for both staff and attendees. The Leeds Stop Smoking Service will continue to explore outreach opportunities that help reach people where they live, work and shop, making it easier for more people to access support and take their first step towards a smokefree future.
