Looking ahead to a healthier future – Thomas’ story

18 Jun 2026

Thomas joined the Stop Vaping service provided by Leeds Stop Smoking Services after deciding to quit vaping in preparation for surgery. Although he had previously attempted to quit, stress had led him back to vaping after three months.

“I was quite scared as I didn’t really want to quit, but I knew I had to,” said Thomas.

Like many people, Thomas experienced challenges when trying to quit alone. Stressful situations, social environments, and university work made it difficult to stay on track. However, accessing support through the service gave him the structure and reassurance he needed to succeed.

When you choose to quit with us, you’re not alone. Having access to tailored guidance, support, and encouragement can make a real difference in overcoming cravings and building long-term habits.

“The service was very easy to access, and they got back to me quickly. Emma was amazing and so supportive throughout the whole time.”

With guidance from his Health Coach, Emma, Thomas used a combination of nicotine patches and an inhalator. This personalised approach helped him manage cravings effectively, particularly during high-stress periods.

“I found the inhalator super useful, and I really appreciated that Emma responded to what treatments I found beneficial to provide care unique to me.”

Leeds Stop Smoking Service provides flexible, personalised support, including one-to-one sessions and access to free nicotine replacement therapies, helping people build the confidence and tools needed to quit for good.

The one-to-one support and ongoing encouragement helped Thomas stay committed, even when faced with triggers such as social situations or seeing others vape or smoke.

“I let my mates know I was quitting and they were really respectful – that made a big difference.”

Thomas has now been vape-free for several months and is focusing on maintaining his progress long-term. Without the cost of vaping, he has been able to invest more in his hobbies and enjoys the sense of achievement that comes with quitting.

“I haven’t really been keeping track, but I’ve stayed quit and that feels great. I’ve put the money I’ve saved into my hobbies. I plan to remain nicotine free for as long as I can. I know it might be harder without regular support, but I feel like I can reach out if I need to.”
