Stronger together – Jacqui’s story

23 Apr 2026

Jacqui was motivated to quit smoking due to concerns about her health and finances. Having tried to quit before but only managing a few days, Jacqui knew she needed support to quit for good. Feeling confident about reaching out, she contacted Leeds Stop Smoking Services and joined a group programme, determined to make a lasting change.

“My main motivation to quit was my health and finances. I had tried to stop before but only managed five days. Most of my friends smoked, so I always ended up going back to it.”

“When I was smoking, I didn’t feel very sociable and I knew I wasn’t as healthy as I could be. By the time I contacted the service, I felt confident and ready to quit completely.”

Leeds Stop Smoking Service provides free, supportive programmes designed to help people quit smoking in a way that works for them. Through group based support and access to proven stop smoking treatments, participants are supported by experienced coaches and encouraged through shared experiences, motivation, and practical guidance.

“I chose to use Varenicline and attended group sessions. The group sessions were really good, and Adam, the coach, was incredibly supportive and motivating. It helped so much being in a group where everyone was at different stages and sharing their stories.”

“I did have the odd feeling of wanting a cigarette, but I reminded myself that I don’t smoke anymore — and those feelings passed within seconds.”

“I’ve now been smokefree for five weeks. Although the medication has made me feel a bit tired, I feel far healthier than I did before. I’ve rewarded myself with some of the money I’ve saved, and I’ve also been able to treat my grandchildren.”

“My sister quit smoking at the same time in the same group, so we’ve been able to support each other. I’m now a non‑smoker and have no intention of going back. This journey has shown me that with the right support, quitting really is possible.”
